According to Rabbi Feinstein in Ir Tehila, the tedious process of building the Great Synagogue in the new city took 10 years due to various obstacles. It was completed in 5622 [1862].
English translation:
Due to of all kinds of obstructions and lack of funds to cover all aspects of the construction, the work took 10 years and was only finished at the end of 1861. In 1862, its gates were opened to the people to pray there on the High Holidays.
Still, the synagogue was partly bare. More work remained to be done inside the building.
English translation:
Unfortunately, the community could not attend to all the needs of the synagogue and make it an dignified house of worship. The finishing touches were missing. They did not have an ark, or the ritual vessels, and the floor was bare. Those who were acquainted with the glory of the former synagogue were tearful to see the lack of beauty of this new synagogue.
